Who was Hattie Carnegie

Hattie Carnegie, a fashion revolutionary ahead of her time, was born Henrietta Kanengeiser in Austria-Hungary on March 15, 1880. Upon immigrating to the U.S. in 1886, she anglicized her last name to Carnegie, seemingly in tribute to Andrew Carnegie, a man she greatly admired. She also adopted the name Hattie, a nickname earned during her tenure as a top milliner in New York City.

In 1939, Hattie Carnegie introduced costume jewelry to complement her already renowned clothing line. Her jewelry embraced various styles, and today collectors eagerly seek after Hattie Carnegie’s pieces.

All Hattie Carnegie jewelry is characterized by high-quality rhinestones, enameling, design, and craftsmanship. Many talented jewelry designers, including Kenneth Jay Lane, Norman Norell, and Nadine Effront, collaborated under the Hattie Carnegie name. Hattie Carnegie passed away in 1956, just shy of her 70th birthday. This diminutive, 4’10” woman left an indelible mark on the fashion world that is not soon forgotten.
