About the Avon Company

In 1886, David McConnell founded Avon as the California Perfume Company, ironically in New York City. He recruited businesswoman Persis Foster Eames Albee as a salesperson. She developed the familiar multi-level marketing business that has empowered thousands of women to work for themselves. The company changed its name to Avon Products, Inc. in 1938.

Despite decades in business, Avon only started producing jewelry in 1963. Initially, they did not offer the first pieces for sale; instead, they bundled them as gifts with purchases. In 1965, they tested a small amount of jewelry for sale.

One of the first collections was The Precious Pretenders, earrings shown above, released in March 1967. The popularity of Avon jewelry resulted in a full section in its catalogs beginning in 1971.

Authentic Avon jewelry is marked “AVON” in all caps or script. The company worked with many designers on exclusive jewelry collections, including Kenneth Jay Lane (1986 – 2005), marked “K.J.L. for AVON,” and Jose and Maria Barrera (1989 – 1996), marked “Barrera for AVON.” Elizabeth Taylor also personally designed collections between 1993 and 1997.

Jewelry is still available online directly from the company as well as those storied Avon ladies.
