VINTAGE CONDITION

Bakelite is an early form of plastic, first developed in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. It became a popular material in the 1920s through the 1940s, especially in the production of costume jewelry. Known for its durability, Bakelite is lightweight, easily molded, and could be produced in vibrant colors.

In vintage jewelry, Bakelite was often used for bold, chunky pieces like bangles, brooches, and earrings. Its smooth surface, rich colors, and distinctive “clunk” sound when tapped make it highly collectible today. Many Bakelite pieces also develop a characteristic patina over time, adding to their charm and value.
