About Galalith

Galalith is a type of early plastic made from the casein protein found in milk. Developed in the late 19th century, it was widely used for making buttons, jewelry, pens, and other decorative items from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century.

Galalith was valued for its ability to be dyed in vibrant colors, molded into various shapes, and polished to a smooth, glossy finish. It was durable, non-toxic, and had an appearance similar to horn, ivory, or other natural materials. However, it couldn’t be melted or reshaped once set, which limited its applications compared to other plastics that emerged later, like Bakelite.

It’s still appreciated today by collectors of vintage accessories, especially for its use in Art Deco and early 20th-century jewelry and accessories.
