Red Bakelite Necklace Details

This 18″ necklace brings together a bold lineup of red Bakelite beads in eye-catching shapes, each separated by bright chrome spacers that make the color come alive. The strand closes with a classic screw clasp, a detail we love from early plastics jewelry.

Machine Age design emerged in the years after WWI, when artists and makers drew inspiration from locomotives, skyscrapers, and the sleek new world of industry. Jewelry from this era often featured chrome and saturated hues—especially red and black—creating a look that felt modern, confident, and full of motion. This necklace sits squarely in that tradition, offering a striking slice of 1930s style.

The necklace has been restrung, so it’s ready to wear and enjoy.

About Art Deco

Art Deco began in Paris in the 1910s and reached full brilliance in the 1920s–30s, blending bold geometry with a fascination for modernity. Inspired by cubism, ancient Egypt, and the machine age, designers embraced strong lines, vivid enamels, and striking contrasts. Today, authentic Art Deco pieces are treasured for their crisp symmetry and the glamorous, forward-looking style that defined the era.

History

Bakelite is an early form of plastic, first developed in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. It became a popular material in the 1920s through the 1940s, especially in the production of costume jewelry. Known for its durability, Bakelite is lightweight, easily molded, and could be produced in vibrant colors.

In Vintage Jewelry

Bakelite was often used for bold, chunky pieces like bangles, brooches, and earrings. Its smooth surface, rich colors, and distinctive “clunk” sound when tapped make it highly collectible today. Many Bakelite pieces also develop a characteristic patina over time, adding to their charm and value.
