About Trapunto

Quilting enthusiasts use the trapunto technique to create a raised, three-dimensional effect by adding extra padding to specific areas of a quilt. The term “trapunto” originates from the Italian words “trapuntare,” meaning to quilt, and “trapunto,” meaning to embroider.

In this process, two layers of fabric are typically stitched together, leaving an unstitched area. This unstitched section is then filled with padding materials like cotton, wool, or another type of batting to introduce volume. Once the padding is incorporated, the quilting continues over the raised areas, resulting in a textured and elevated effect.

Trapunto serves to emphasize particular motifs or elements in a quilt, introducing depth and visual interest. This quilting technique, evolving into various styles and methods, has been practiced for centuries. Achieving well-defined and consistent raised areas throughout the quilt requires precision in stitching.
