Dodds Brooch Details
Metal finished in a lighter, champagne-toned gold that gives the piece a softer glow than traditional yellow gold. Features finely textured metalwork, giving the bird dimension and lifelike detail, while rows of burgundy and ruby-toned rhinestones trace the wings and tail in a graceful arc. THE HISTORY OF DODDS JEWELRY
About Dodds
Dodds costume jewelry was founded in 1952 by William Dodds in Newark, New Jersey, at the height of America’s mid-century jewelry boom. Originally operating through a subsidiary called Jewel Creations, the company produced richly detailed gold-tone designs set with rhinestones and glass stones, often with bold, dimensional styling.
Dodds pieces from the 1950s and 1960s are especially prized today for their high-quality construction and distinctive figural designs—from florals to birds—made before the company ceased production in the 1970s.
This piece is signed “11 W 30 St. Inc.,” an early Dodds hallmark referencing the company’s Newark, New Jersey address. Before the Dodds name became the standard signature, the firm often used its street address as a maker’s mark—making pieces like this a nice indicator of earlier production, typically dating to the 1950s into the early 1960s.
HOW TO CARE FOR VINTAGE JEWELRY
How to Care for Vintage Jewelry
Always handle vintage jewelry gently and store it carefully between wearings. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches, tangling, or metal abrasion. Avoid contact with water, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, which can dull finishes or weaken settings. To clean, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away oils and dust.
For metals and stones, use a mild, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner suited to the materials. Never submerge rhinestone or glued pieces in water or use ultrasonic cleaners, as moisture can damage the foil backing or loosen stones. With proper care, your vintage jewelry will retain its beauty and character for years to come.
