ABOUT JEAN LANG
About Jean Lang
The Jean Lang Company was a respected American women’s apparel manufacturer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, active from 1926 until 1977. Known in department stores across the Midwest and beyond, the firm built its reputation on producing well-made, stylish dresses at accessible prices — the kind of quality ready-to-wear that defined midcentury American fashion.
Early Years and Growth
Founded during the rise of modern mass-market fashion, Jean Lang specialized in practical but polished daywear for the modern woman. By the 1940s and 1950s, the company became especially known for its wool jersey dresses, Orlon blends, and easy-fitting silhouettes that moved with the body. Their advertising emphasized durability, washability, and the new “miracle fibers” of the postwar era — exactly the messaging seen in your 1952 ad.
Signature Materials & Styles
Jean Lang excelled in:
- Wool jersey dresses, often using branded fibers like Sag-No-Mor or Wyner’s blends.
- Easy-care synthetics such as Orlon and nylon during the 1950s–60s “miracle fabric” boom.
- Jacket dresses and coordinated sets with embroidered or textured details.
- Smart daytime silhouettes with contour belts, pleated skirts, and flattering waist emphasis.
Their garments were positioned as stylish but sensible — ideal for the office, luncheons, and everyday wear.
National Presence
Though headquartered in Minneapolis, Jean Lang garments were sold through major regional department stores, including: B. Altman, Gimbels, Carson Pirie Scott, plus Dozens of Main Street shops across the Midwest and Plains states.
Later Years & Closure
The company continued producing dresses into the early 1970s, adapting to fashion shifts with polyester knits and more relaxed silhouettes. By 1977, after over fifty years in business, Jean Lang closed amid the broader decline of American regional apparel manufacturers.
Legacy
Today, Jean Lang pieces are appreciated for their craftsmanship, flattering cuts, and beautiful wool jerseys. They represent the golden era of American midcentury ready-to-wear — thoughtfully made garments designed to be lived in, loved, and worn for years.
ABOUT VINTAGE SIZING
Confused about vintage clothing sizing? Today’s sizes have very little correlation to clothing size labels from past decades. Over the past 20+ years, designers and manufacturers have fed our egos by making standard size numbers smaller and smaller. Back in the 1960s, there was no size 0. The smallest size usually was a 6. Thus the legend of Marilyn Monroe wearing a size 12. Plus, today’s men and women are fitter, taller, and have much more muscle tone than people of earlier eras. Even undergarments make a difference. Today’s woman isn’t corseted, girdled, or wearing a stiff bra. So even the thinnest among us sometimes have trouble wearing vintage clothes.
