What is a Platter Hat

A platter hat also called a “plateau” or “platter beret,” was the late 1940s to 1950s adaptation of a design from the 1820s, characterized by a wide, almost completely flat disk brim with little or no discernible crown. The disk sits on top of a cup or platform called an inner crown grip that fits on the crown of the head.

The dish hat, introduced by Dior in 1947, has a similar cup or crown that sits underneath the all-encompassing brim.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
