ABOUT TRIFARI

History

Trifari became one of the most renowned costume jewelry brands in the 20th century, known for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs. Founded in 1910 by Gustavo Trifari, an Italian immigrant, the company quickly gained a reputation for high-quality jewelry that mirrored fine jewelry styles. In the 1920s, Trifari partnered with Leo Krussman and Carl Fishel, forming Trifari, Krussman & Fishel (TKF), but by the late 1930s, the brand was simply known as Trifari.

Alfred Philippe Era

During the 1930s and 1940s, Trifari revolutionized costume jewelry under the artistic direction of Alfred Philippe, a former Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels designer. Philippe introduced intricate settings and invisible stone settings, giving Trifari jewelry a luxurious look that set it apart from competitors. The brand’s designs became favorites among Hollywood stars and even First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, who wore Trifari pieces to her husband’s inaugural ball.

Mid-Century Advances

Throughout the mid-century, Trifari continued to innovate, creating popular collections featuring fruit salads, crown motifs, and elaborate floral designs. The company used high-quality gold-tone alloys, rhodium plating, and signature enameling techniques to ensure durability and elegance. By the 1970s and 1980s, Trifari adapted to changing fashion trends while maintaining its reputation for refined costume jewelry.

Later Years

In 1988, the Monet Group acquired Trifari, and later, Liz Claiborne purchased the brand in 2000. While production shifted over time, vintage Trifari remains highly collectible today, with its mid-century designs particularly prized by jewelry enthusiasts.
