KJL Turtle Brooch Details

This sculptural turtle brooch features a rich, deep blue cabochon center, surrounded by a halo of smaller lapis-colored cabochons and clear crystals, all set in a warm gold-tone setting. The dimensional design gives it that signature KJL presence—substantial without feeling heavy.

Even better, it includes a pendant bale, so you can wear it two ways: pinned or strung on a chain for a statement necklace moment.

A standout piece that leans into KJL’s love of faux luxury—big look, big impact, no apologies.

  •  Kenneth Jay Lane (marked K.J.L.).
  • Gold-tone metal, lapis-colored glass cabochons, clear crystals.
  • Bejeweled head and highly detailed legs.
  • Pin back with rollover clasp.
  • Pendant bale for necklace wear.
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age.

Why We Love It

It’s the kind of piece that does the work for you—pin it on a blazer or slip it onto a chain and suddenly the whole outfit has a point of view.

Who Was Kenneth Jay Lane

Kenneth Jay Lane advertisement 1976He was one of the most successful costume jewelers of all time. He got his start designing shoes for Delman and Christian Dior, using his free time to create jewelry. By the late 60s, he opened his own design house. Lane designed jewelry all across the price spectrum from unique designs for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the Duchess of Windsor to Bergdorf Goodman to QVC.  In the 1980s, he created many jewelry collections for Avon.

Known for its high quality and incredible style, KJL jewelry ranges from classic pearls and gold metal door knocker earrings to ethnic tribal pieces and even over-the-top rococo and baroque designs Lane designed for many companies over the past 50 years. Lane was good about using different marks to designate age and distributor, which helps to date his jewelry and who made it.  Information about his marks is in our KJL blog post.

Kenneth Jay Lane passed away in 2017, but his namesake company is still going strong. Every woman should have at least one piece of KJL in her collection. Be sure to read our post on this amazing and prolific jewelry designer.

How to Care for Vintage Jewelry

Always handle vintage jewelry gently and store it carefully between wearings. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches, tangling, or metal abrasion. Avoid contact with water, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, which can dull finishes or weaken settings. To clean, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away oils and dust. For metals and stones, use a mild, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner suited to the materials. Never submerge rhinestone or glued pieces in water or use ultrasonic cleaners, as moisture can damage the foil backing or loosen stones. With proper care, your vintage jewelry will retain its beauty and character for years to come.
