What is a Turban

A traditional turban is made from a long, draped scarf wrapped around the head, which they wrapped and draped with fabric to resemble a wrapped scarf turban. This hat style dates back 5,000 years to Mesopotamia. Paul Poiret popularized them for women in the first decade of the 1900s as a rigid hat with a beehive-shaped crown and no brim. The modern turban was an important design marking the transition from the enormous hats of the decade to the close-fitting cloche of the 1920s. Turbans were very popular throughout the 1940s. Turbans made a comeback in the 1960s in a style similar to a toque or a pillbox.

How to Care for Vintage Hats

To keep your vintage hat looking its best, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a hat box or tissue paper to support the crown and brim, helping it maintain its original shape. Always handle your hat gently by the brim, not the crown, to avoid misshaping it. For dust removal, lightly brush the surface with a soft cloth or a hat brush. Avoid using water or household cleaners—many vintage materials, such as straw, felt, velvet, and crinoline, are delicate and can be permanently damaged by moisture. If your hat needs a deeper cleaning or reshaping, take it to a professional milliner who specializes in vintage restoration.
