ABOUT VENDOME JEWELRY
About Coro/Corocraft/Vendome
Emanuel Cohn and Carl Rosenberger started Coro in 1901 as a small accessories store on Broadway in New York City. The company officially changed its name to Coro Inc., a combination of the two names, in 1943. Coro was once one of the largest costume jewelry companies in the world.
Major lines included Coro, Corocraft, and Vendome. Vendome was considered the most exclusive line featured at high-end department stores. Regular department stores that carried the main Coro lines were not allowed to carry Vendome
Coro employed many distinctive designers including Adolph Katz, design director; Gene Verecchio; Oscar Placco; Robert Geissmann, and Massa Raimond.
The company filed for bankruptcy in the late 1970s. Coro had a large number of jewelry lines. Click on this link for a complete list.

ABOUT JAPANNED JEWELRY
“Japanned” refers to a type of finish, specifically, a high-gloss black lacquer coating applied to metal. The term originated in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, when Western artisans attempted to imitate the appearance of Japanese lacquerware using their materials. The resulting finish was shiny, durable, and richly black—thus, “japanning” became shorthand for this glossy black coating.
In vintage costume jewelry, especially mid-century pieces like this Vendome set, japanned metal typically features a matte or glossy black enamel finish on the setting. This dark backdrop makes rhinestones—especially those in warm or jewel tones—appear more vivid and dramatic.
Vendome, like other high-end lines of Coro, used japanning to give its designs a more sophisticated, theatrical look, particularly in evening or floral pieces. It’s a classic choice for mid-century glamour!
