What is Bakelite?
Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. A thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde resin, it is formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Originally developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1907. The range of colors available included black, brown, red, yellow, green, gray, blue, and blends. Used in everything from jewelry to radios to industrial products. Eventually, Bakelite lost favor to newer plastics available in more and brighter colors.
