About the Warner Jewelry Case Company

Founded in Buffalo, New York, in the early 1900s, the Warner Jewelry Case Company specialized in crafting presentation boxes for fine jewelers across the United States. Known for their inventive use of celluloid and early plastics, Warner produced some of the most distinctive Art Deco ring and bracelet boxes of the 1930s and 1940s.

Their designs often featured bold geometric motifs, rich colors, and molded lids that echoed the era’s streamlined style. Many Warner boxes were custom-lined and stamped with the names of local jewelers, making each a tiny piece of retail history. The company later became Warner Box & Display Co., continuing its tradition of jewelry packaging and display manufacturing into the later twentieth century.

About Celluloid

Celluloid is one of the earliest semi-synthetic plastics, created in the late 1800s by combining nitrocellulose with camphor. Lightweight, moldable, and wonderfully versatile, it became a favorite material for jewelry, vanity items, and decorative boxes well into the 1930s. Makers used it to imitate ivory, tortoiseshell, and horn or to produce vibrant colors and intricate molded designs that weren’t possible with natural materials. Because celluloid can warp or dry out when exposed to heat, well-preserved pieces are especially prized by collectors today.

How to Care for Vintage Jewelry

Always handle vintage jewelry gently and store it carefully between wearings. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches, tangling, or metal abrasion. Avoid contact with water, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, which can dull finishes or weaken settings. To clean, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away oils and dust. For metals and stones, use a mild, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner suited to the materials. Never submerge rhinestone or glued pieces in water or use ultrasonic cleaners, as moisture can damage the foil backing or loosen stones. With proper care, your vintage jewelry will retain its beauty and character for years to come.
