About Wingback Earrings

Wingback earrings may look mysterious at first, but they deliver some of the most secure and comfortable vintage wear you’ll find.

To wear them, slide the curved metal “wing” over the back of your earlobe—it cradles the lower ear for extra support. Then gently close the clip to keep everything in place. The wing distributes pressure evenly, giving you a snug, pinch-free fit that stays put all day. Try them once, and you’ll understand why vintage fans love this clever design.

Wingback earrings were developed by Judith McCann in the 1950s.  Looking for a more comfortable style she created the style with tiny “wings” that slipped over the curve of the ear.  Read our blog post on Judith McCann and wingback earrings.

Aurora borealis, often abbreviated AB, is a special iridescent finish developed by Swarovski in the 1950s. This coating adds a shimmering rainbow effect to crystal and glass beads, making them catch and reflect light with stunning intensity. The name comes from the northern lights—and with good reason. The coating creates flashes of pink, gold, blue, and violet across the surface, adding extra sparkle and dimension to jewelry.

Designers of the 1950s and ’60s embraced this finish to give costume pieces a magical, luminous glow that’s still enchanting today.
