About Claude Montana

In 1949, Montana was born in Paris and began selling his Papier-mâché jewelry line in London during the 1960s. Upon returning to Paris in the early 1970s, he collaborated with the leather accessory company MacDouglas. He officially launched his line in 1977, emerging as one of the most influential designers of the 1980s.

Montana’s designs featured powerful, masculine lines, and his jackets typically incorporated exaggerated shoulder pads. High-powered women highly coveted his creations. In the late 80s, he additionally contributed to Lanvin’s designs for several years.

He retired from fashion design in the 1990s following the death of his wife.

About The Ebony Fashion Fair

Eunice Johnson, co-founder of the Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Company, which publishes Ebony Magazine, founded EFF in 1958. The annual fashion show showcased male and female models, predominantly of African-American descent, presenting fashions from renowned European designers like Yves St Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Givenchy, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Valentino, and Emanuel Ungaro.

Johnson’s goal was to bring high fashion couture to African-American women who often lacked access to the best shops. The show served as a launchpad for many African-American fashion designers, including Stephen Burrows, Patrick Kelly, and Willi Smith.

After Johnson’s death, EFF concluded in 2019. Johnson Publishing has gradually deaccessioned the fashions since then, and this collection from Madge includes some of the last pieces made available.
