About Hattie Carnegie

Hattie Carnegie, a fashion revolutionary ahead of her time, born Henrietta Kanengeiser in Austria-Hungary on March 15, 1880, immigrated to the U.S. in 1886 and anglicized her last name to Carnegie as a tribute to Andrew Carnegie, a man she greatly admired.

During her tenure as a top milliner in New York City, she earned the nickname Hattie.

In 1939, Hattie Carnegie introduced costume jewelry to complement her already renowned clothing line, encompassing various styles, including imaginative figurals. Additionally, many talented jewelry designers, such as Kenneth Jay Lane, Norman Norell, and Nadine Effront, collaborated under the Hattie Carnegie name.

Hattie Carnegie passed away in 1956, just shy of her 70th birthday. This diminutive, 4’10” woman left an indelible mark on the fashion world that is not soon forgotten, leaving behind highly collectible jewelry.
