About Hickok

The Hickok Manufacturing Company had its beginnings as a small jewelry store owned by Stephen Rae Hickok in Rochester, New York, in 1909.  His son Raymond took over the business at age 28 and grew Hickok into the largest belt manufacturer in the world.

Hickok was also known for other men’s accessories, including cufflinks, tie bars, and cigarette boxes.  In addition to the Hickok name, the company made accessories under various names, including Crocodile Grip, Hi Lite, Individually Yours, Live Flex, Nugget Knots, and Sky High.

In 1961, Hickok purchased Pioneer Industries Inc. of Philadelphia, the second-largest manufacturer of men’s accessories. The move pushed Rochester to center stage as the national headquarters for men’s accessories.

Hicock remained a family company until it was purchased by a holding company in 1970s, then a year later by the Tandy Corporation of Ft. Worth, Texas.  In 1972, operations moved to Texas.  As the fortunes of Tandy declined, Hickok closed sometime in the late 1980s.
