Peter Wilhjelm Nielsen was a Danish jewelry designer who was active during the 1960s and early 1970s. Operating out of Copenhagen between 1967 and 1973, he crafted pieces that exemplify the Brutalist style, characterized by bold, abstract designs and textured surfaces. His creations often feature materials such as sterling silver combined with natural stones like aventurine and agate. Nielsen’s work is typically signed with the initials “P.W.N. Denmark,” indicating its authenticity.

Collectors appreciate Nielsen’s jewelry for its distinctive aesthetic and representation of mid-20th-century Scandinavian design. His pieces are considered unique and are sought after in the vintage jewelry market.

What is Brutalist Jewelry?

Architects developed the Brutalist movement in the mid-20th century, and it gained popularity in the late 1950s and 1960s. Influenced by modernist architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Brutalism inspired artists and jewelry makers to create a distinctive, avant-garde style

Aventurine Quartz

Aventurine is a variety of quartz characterized by its shimmering or glittering effect, known as aventurescence. Tiny inclusions of mineral platelets, typically mica, hematite, or goethite,  reflect light causing this effect,

Most commonly green, it can also appear in shades of blue, red, orange, or yellow, depending on the inclusions.  The green hue in this necklace is typically due to fuchsite (a chromium-rich type of mica).  Aventurine displays a soft, sparkly sheen caused by the aventurescence effect.
