Cicada Brooch Details

If you’ve ever spent a summer afternoon where the air hums and time slows just a little, you already know the charm of the cicada. In southern France, the cicada—known as the cigale—is a symbol of sunshine, good luck, and long, lazy days.

Signed by French designer Rene Gouin (often written as René Gouin), this figural cicada brooch features a gleaming goldtone body with vibrant enamel panels in jewel-bright shades of red, green, blue, yellow, and violet. The segmented wings give it a stained-glass effect that catches the light with every turn.

Part of a long tradition of figural insect jewelry, this piece blends playful subject matter with a polished, wearable design.

She’s petite but full of personality, just the sort of piece that starts conversations and finds her way into regular rotation.

  • René Gouin signed brooch.
  • Late 20th century (likely 1980s–1990s).
  • Goldtone metal with multicolor enamel.
  • Cicada (Provençal symbol of good luck).
  • Size: 0.75″ W x 2″ L.
  • Secure rollover pin back.

Why We Love It:

VINTAGE CONDITION

Vintage Jewelry Care

Always handle vintage jewelry gently and store it carefully between wearings. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches, tangling, or metal abrasion. Avoid contact with water, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, which can dull finishes or weaken settings. To clean, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away oils and dust. For metals and stones, use a mild, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner suited to the materials. Never submerge rhinestone or glued pieces in water or use ultrasonic cleaners, as moisture can damage the foil backing or loosen stones. With proper care, your vintage jewelry will retain its beauty and character for years to come.
