ABOUT STEVE FABRIKANT
Steve Fabrikant is a retired American fashion designer best known for his innovative knitwear and modernist approach to design during the late 1970s through the 1990s. Based in New York, Fabrikant developed a reputation for his architectural use of line, texture, and asymmetry. His pieces often featured color-blocked panels, sculptural seaming, and art-inspired motifs that set them apart from conventional knit designs of the era.
Fabrikant cited artists like Henri Matisse as influences—particularly the fluid, cut-paper shapes from Matisse’s late career. This inspiration translated into his garments through curved panels, organic geometry, and bold yet balanced color contrasts.
A member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), his modern designs were sold in prestigious retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and in select specialty boutiques throughout the U.S. and Japan.
Collectors prize Fabrikant’s creations today for their gallery-worthy silhouettes and the way they merge fine art and fashion—hallmarks of 1980s – 1990s design innovation.
