HISTORICAL NOTE: TEXAS KNIGHTS TEMPLAR
Historical Note: Texas Knights Templar
The Texas Knights Templar is a prominent branch of the York Rite of Freemasonry, which traces its origins to medieval Christian chivalric orders. Rooted in religious symbolism and moral virtue, the modern Masonic Knights Templar draws inspiration from the legendary crusading knights of the 12th century.
The Texas chapter began in earnest with the establishment of San Antonio Commandery No. 1 in 1855, just a decade after Texas joined the United States. As Freemasonry flourished in the growing republic-turned-state, so did the influence of the York Rite and its highest orders.
Texas Knights Templar members participate in elaborate ceremonies and wear full regalia—including ornate swords, embroidered tunics, and belts like this one—to represent their commitment to faith, integrity, and the Masonic ideals of brotherhood and service. Today, Texas remains home to one of the most active Masonic communities in the country, with commanderies across the state preserving both tradition and fraternity.
