Vintage Trifari Necklace Details

This elegant vintage Trifari gold chain is a rare new old stock find, still wearing its original Crown Trifari paper hang tag—a true jewelry-counter time capsule that was never sold or worn.

The chain features Trifari’s beautifully engineered box-chain construction, made from tiny squared links that fit together in a smooth, fluid line. At 24 inches, it wears perfectly on its own or layered with pendants and shorter chains for a curated vintage look.

Trifari introduced its Glitter line in the late 1960s and made it a signature of the 1970s, using the name for their finest gold-tone chains and everyday luxury jewelry. Designed to shimmer like fine gold, Glitter pieces were sold through major department stores and became a go-to for women who wanted polished, elegant style without fuss.

Trifari was renowned for its superior gold-tone finishes and precision craftsmanship, and this chain shows it—rich, even color, crisp link structure, and a secure spring-ring clasp accented with the signature Crown Trifari charm.

This is not a reproduction. This is authentic vintage Trifari, preserved exactly as it left the store in the early-to-mid 1970s.

About Trifari

History

Trifari became one of the most renowned costume jewelry brands in the 20th century, known for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs. Founded in 1910 by Gustavo Trifari, an Italian immigrant, the company quickly gained a reputation for high-quality jewelry that mirrored fine jewelry styles. In the 1920s, Trifari partnered with Leo Krussman and Carl Fishel, forming Trifari, Krussman & Fishel (TKF), but by the late 1930s, the brand was simply known as Trifari.

Alfred Philippe Era

During the 1930s and 1940s, Trifari revolutionized costume jewelry under the artistic direction of Alfred Philippe, a former Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels designer. Philippe introduced intricate settings and invisible stone settings, giving Trifari jewelry a luxurious look that set it apart from competitors. The brand’s designs became favorites among Hollywood stars and even First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, who wore Trifari pieces to her husband’s inaugural ball.

Mid-Century Advances

Throughout the mid-century, Trifari continued to innovate, creating popular collections featuring fruit salads, crown motifs, and elaborate floral designs. The company used high-quality gold-tone alloys, rhodium plating, and signature enameling techniques to ensure durability and elegance. By the 1970s and 1980s, Trifari adapted to changing fashion trends while maintaining its reputation for refined costume jewelry.

Later Years

In 1988, the Monet Group acquired Trifari, and later, Liz Claiborne purchased the brand in 2000. While production shifted over time, vintage Trifari remains highly collectible today, with its mid-century designs particularly prized by jewelry enthusiasts.

How to Care for Vintage Jewelry

Always handle vintage jewelry gently and store it carefully between wearings. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches, tangling, or metal abrasion. Avoid contact with water, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, which can dull finishes or weaken settings. To clean, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away oils and dust. For metals and stones, use a mild, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner suited to the materials. Never submerge rhinestone or glued pieces in water or use ultrasonic cleaners, as moisture can damage the foil backing or loosen stones. With proper care, your vintage jewelry will retain its beauty and character for years to come.
