One of the best things about selling vintage is learning the history of those who lovingly owned the vintage pieces that are now in our shop. If you admire “The Greatest Generation” you will enjoy the story of Hugh Quam Stevens. Mr. Stevens served as the president of the Vincennes Steel Company, based in Vincennes, Indiana, from 1937 to 1957.
Born in July 1900 in Brownsville, Minnesota, Mr. Stevens was the son of a local doctor and a homemaker. After high school, Mr. Stevens enlisted in the military and actively participated in WWI.
Back stateside, Stevens attended the University of Florida. After graduating, he relocated to Vincennes, Indiana, where he found employment with Vincennes Bridge Company, the precursor to Vincennes Steel.
Vincennes, known as a major bridge builder, shifted its focus to Naval shipbuilding during WWII. Under Mr. Steven’s leadership, the company received the Army and Navy “E” award, an honor presented to companies during World War II. This award recognized companies whose production facilities achieved “Excellence in Production” (“E”) of war equipment. Under his leadership, Vincennes Steel won the award four times.
Stevens, a true community leader, held the position of president of the local Rotary Club. He also served as the Director of the YMCA for 35 years and was a member of the Elks Lodge, number 291, for 47 years. Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion and held the rank of a 32nd° Mason. After a well-deserved retirement, Stevens relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, where he passed away in 1971.
A true member of the greatest generation and always a stylish dresser, his family and Madge are extremely proud to feature his collection of cufflinks, and accessories; plus a wonderful selection of vintage jewelry from his wife and daughter
