What is a Tilt Hat

McCurdys Tilt hat ad 1938A tilt hat is designed to sit at an angle rather than straight across the head, creating an effortlessly styled, off-center look. Popular from the 1930s through the 1980s, these hats are often secured with clips or combs and are known for their sculptural shapes and flattering lines. Worn slightly to the side or forward on the crown, a tilt hat adds instant polish with very little effort—just place it, angle it, and go.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.

Always handle vintage hats by the brim, not the crown. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep them in a hatbox or covered with acid-free tissue to prevent dust.
