About Gimbels
Gimbels, founded in 1842 by Adam Gimbel in Vincennes, Indiana, grew into one of America’s most iconic department store chains. Expanding to New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, Gimbels became known for its slogan “Select, don’t settle” and its legendary rivalry with Macy’s — a competition immortalized in Miracle on 34th Street.
Beyond retail, Gimbels pioneered modern marketing, launching the first Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia in 1920. The store carried an extensive range of fashion, jewelry, and accessories, often featuring exclusive lines and collaborations with noted designers.
As shopping trends evolved in the late 20th century, Gimbels gradually declined and closed in 1987. Today, vintage pieces from Gimbels reflect a golden era of American department store fashion and craftsmanship.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE
How to Find Your Hat Size
- Pull a fabric tape measure or a length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
- Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
- If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
