About Gimbels

Gimbels, founded in 1842 by Adam Gimbel in Vincennes, Indiana, grew into one of the largest and most iconic department store chains in the United States. By the early 20th century, Gimbels had expanded to major cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, becoming a retail giant known for its slogan, “Select, don’t settle.” The store was a fierce competitor of Macy’s, famously sparking the “Gimbels vs. Macy’s” rivalry that inspired the classic holiday film *Miracle on 34th Street*. Gimbels was also a pioneer in marketing, including launching the first Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia in 1920. However, as retail trends shifted in the post-war era, Gimbels struggled to maintain its dominance and eventually closed its doors in 1987, marking the end of an era in American retail history.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
