ABOUT BETMAR
About Betmar Hats
Betmar Hats, founded in the 1930s in New York City, quickly became a leading name in women’s headwear. The brand’s name comes from Betty Marks, its early head designer, whose influence shaped its signature style. Women embraced Betmar for its stylish, affordable hats during an era when headwear was essential to fashion.
Throughout the mid-20th century, Betmar gained fame for crafting classic, feminine designs that reflected changing trends. They used high-quality materials like wool, felt, and straw to create a wide variety of hats, from timeless cloches and berets to wide-brimmed sun hats.
Today, Betmar continues to offer elegant and versatile hats, blending tradition with modern style and remaining a staple in millinery.
WHAT IS A HELMET HAT
What is a Helmet Hat
A helmet hat is a cap closely fitting the head and covering the ears. Sometimes they have visors that project in front, like those on baseball caps or police caps. In the 1960s, helmets shaped like a London Bobby’s helmet, with a chin strap and sometimes with a visor were popular.
Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian-inspired helmet, introduced in 1965, was iconic of the mod style. It had squares and rectangles of bright colors, outlined in black stripes, like the paintings that Mondrian made famous.
In 1965, Pierre Cardin designed a Cosmos collection, including a helmet that resembled a dome-shaped felt astronaut’s helmet with a hole for the face. The Metropolitan Museum has a wool helmet by Simone Ourtan, circa 1964, in its collection. From Hatatorium: An Essential Guide for Hat Collectors, 2nd Edition.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE
HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE
- Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
- Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
- If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
- Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
