The two domes on this 1960s navy wool breton hat almost resemble a tiny “pagoda roof” silhouette, which appears in some mid-60s hat illustrations. That may actually be the design inspiration behind this crown shape.
M. Berne Breton Details
This striking mid-century Breton showcases the sculptural millinery trends of the 1960s. Crafted from deep navy wool felt, the crown rises into a distinctive tiered dome, highlighted by a small wool bow at the crown’s upper tier. The clean architectural lines reflect the era’s shift toward modern, shape-driven hat design.
A narrow navy ribbon hatband wraps the crown and finishes with a classic bow at the back. Telescoping brim that widens toward the front. The brim curves gently upward in true Breton style, creating a flattering frame around the face. A slender chin tie adds a charming period detail while helping keep the hat in place on breezy days.
The interior retains its original labels from M. Berne, a Baltimore milliner, and Miss Eileen, a line of felt bodies produced by Henry Pollack. This construction reflects the traditional mid-century millinery process in which felt bodies were blocked and finished by independent milliners.
Elegant, sculptural, and distinctly 1960s, this Breton makes a memorable statement with vintage dresses, tailored coats, or modern minimalist styling.

WHAT IS A BRETON
About Breton Hats
A Breton hat is a rounded or flat-crowned hat with a brim that turns up around the edges, originally worn by peasants in Brittany, a region in France. It is similar to a bowler, but the brim is wider and rolls up more dramatically. Wide brimmed Bretons were popular in the 1960s, when they were worn on the back of the head. An all-over feather Breton circa 1960-65 is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Art Boston. From Hatatorium, An Essential Guide for Hat Collectors, 2nd Edition.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE
HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE
- Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
- Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
- If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
- Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR VINTAGE HAT
Vintage Hat Care
Always handle vintage hats by the brim, not the crown. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep them in a hatbox or covered with acid-free tissue to prevent dust. Avoid using modern sprays or steam, as these can damage delicate materials and trims. For reshaping or cleaning, it’s best to consult a professional milliner experienced in vintage restoration.
