ABOUT VALERIE MODES
About Valerie Modes
Valerie Modes was a major milliner from the 1940s to the 1960s. Early labels had an accent over the E in the word Mode, which might indicate the hats were manufactured in France.
Later hats don’t have the accent and have a union label indicating USA manufacture.
WHAT ARE PANAMA HATS
What is a Panama Hat
Despite its name, the Panama hat actually originated in Ecuador, not Panama. Traditionally woven from the straw of the Toquilla palm (Carludovica palmata), these hats are prized for their lightweight feel, flexibility, and breathability. The art of weaving a true Panama hat—especially the finest grades from Montecristi and Cuenca—can take weeks or even months. Each is handwoven, then shaped and finished to create classic styles like the fedora, optimo, and plantation.
The hats became known as “Panama hats” in the 19th century when they were shipped through Panama to Europe and North America, and famously worn by workers during the construction of the Panama Canal. Today, genuine Panama hats remain a symbol of craftsmanship, elegance, and summer sophistication.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR VINTAGE HAT
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE
HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE
- Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
- Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
- If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
- Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
