Vintage Panama Hat Details
- Panama straw hat by Valerie Modes.
- The helmet-style ridge across the front, top, and back of the crown.
- Wide front brim upturned in the back in a classic 60s mod style.
- This women’s Panama hat has a snazzy cream grosgrain ribbon hatband.

About Valerie Modes
Valerie Modes was a major milliner from the 1940s to the 1960s. Early labels had an accent over the E in the word Mode which might indicate the hats were manufactured in France.
Later hats don’t have the accent and have a union label indicating USA manufacture.
WHAT ARE PANAMA HATS
About Panama Hats
Panama hats are woven from the Carloduvica palmate plant from Ecuador. Panama was the distribution center for these hats thus the name even though they were made in Ecuador, Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, and Guyana. This 1960s women’s Panama hat is a wonderful example.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE
HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE
- Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
- Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
- If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
