What is a Toque

A toque is a somewhat generic term for a brimless hat with a stiff crown. The term “toque” originated from Arabic and then medieval French, but it has been recognized in the English language since the early 1500s. It is commonly used to refer to the tall chef’s hat (toque blanche or “white hat”) still worn today.

European men wore toques from the 13th to 16th centuries. In women’s fashion, the toque has many variations of shapes within the category.

People have seen toques in some version or another in every decade of the 20th Century. In 1945, tall toques came into vogue, a reaction to the restrictions and shortages of hat-making materials during World War II.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
