About Synthetic Horsehair

Milliners used the hair from the manes and tails of horses from the 19th Century to the 1910s.  Eventually, as synthetic horsehair became available it fell out of favor.  Most 20th-century hats, like this one, are made of synthetic horsehair, usually crinoline.

About Don Anderson

Don Anderson was a prominent milliner during the 1950s – 1980s. Born in International Falls he studied art at Parsons School of Design. Frustrated with his career, he stood in front of a millinery supply house when the proprietor asked if he was interested in the hat business. A millinery career was born.

He designed and worked with Chanda, John Fredericks, and Lilly Dache through the years.  Based in Philadelphia,  Anderson was a licensee for Halston.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
