The Toque is a somewhat generic term for a brimless hat with a stiff crown. The term “toque” originated from Arabic and then medieval French, but it has been recognized in the English language since the early 1500s. It is commonly used to refer to the tall chef’s hat (toque blanche or “white hat”) still worn today. European men wore toques from the 13th to 16th centuries. In women’s fashion, toque has many variations of shapes within the category. Toques are seen in some version or another in every decade of the 20th Century. In 1945 tall toques came into vogue, a reaction to the restrictions and shortages of hat making materials during World War II. From Hatatorium: An Essential Guide for Hat Collectors, 3rd Edition.
