What is Horsehair

Milliners used the hair from the manes and tails of horses from the 19th Century to the 1910s.  Eventually, as synthetic horsehair became available it fell out of favor.  Most 20th-century hats, like this one, are made of synthetic horsehair, usually crinoline.

About Don Anderson

Don Anderson was a prominent milliner from the 1950s – 1980s. Born in International Falls he studied art at Parsons School of Design. Frustrated with his career he was standing in front of the millinery supply house when the proprietor asked if he was interested in the hat business. A millinery career was born. Through the years he designed and worked with Chanda, John-Fredericks, and Lilly Dache.  Based in Philadelphia,  Anderson was a licensee for Halston.
