Antique Picture Hat Details

Edwardian hat size with measurements

There’s something about an Edwardian hat that feels just a touch theatrical—in the best way.

This one takes that spirit and softens it.

Crafted in airy black horsehair braid, the hat forms a sheer, almost lace-like silhouette, shaped by a gently undulating wire brim. It has all the hallmarks of a classic picture hat, just without the excess—lighter, easier, and surprisingly wearable.

A band of black velvet ribbon circles the crown, while clusters of silk flowers and delicate feather accents add dimension and a hint of warmth against the dark ground. The effect is subtle but striking, especially when the light comes through the open weave.

It’s the kind of piece that doesn’t shout. It lingers.

A beautiful example of Edwardian millinery—romantic, a little mysterious, and full of texture.

  • Era: Circa 1910 (Edwardian).
  • orsehair braid (crin), wire-brimmed structure, silk flowers, velvet ribbon.

What is a Picture Hat1908 Edwardian picture Hat advertisement

A picture hat is a wide-brimmed style popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, designed to frame the face much like a portrait. Typically lightweight and often made from materials like horsehair braid, lace, or fine straw, these hats feature broad, sometimes undulating brims and decorative trims such as ribbons, flowers, or feathers. While some were grand and elaborate, others—like this example—offer a softer, more wearable take on the classic silhouette.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge

Vintage Hat Care

Always handle vintage hats by the brim, not the crown. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep them in a hatbox or covered with acid-free tissue to prevent dust. Avoid using modern sprays or steam, as these can damage delicate materials and trims. For reshaping or cleaning, it’s best to consult a professional milliner experienced in vintage restoration.
