About Urbi et Orbi

Urbi et Orbi was a unique Yokohama-based milliner active in the 1950s, known for exquisite hats crafted from pheasant feathers. The name “Urbi et Orbi,” a Latin phrase meaning “To the City and to the World,” is traditionally associated with papal blessings. This choice may have been symbolic, reflecting a desire to blend local craftsmanship with a global outlook—a message of transcending boundaries through art and design.

The milliner’s work embodied meticulous Japanese artistry, with the pheasant feather hats being particularly notable for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors. Despite their rarity, these creations occasionally appear in vintage collections, celebrated for their originality and cultural significance.

If you’re interested in acquiring or learning more about these hats, some have surfaced on platforms like eBay and Poshmark. Let me know if you’d like guidance on sourcing these or similar vintage pieces!

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
