This striking Selini jewelry set captures the bold, theatrical spirit of 1950s costume design.
Selini Jewelry Set Details
This signed Selini jewelry set offers a rare opportunity to acquire both the bracelet and matching clip earrings together. Sculptural figural heads in the Blackamoor style anchor each piece, crafted in molded black resin and finished with rhinestone accents. Deeply carved red resin cabochons introduce contrast and visual rhythm, giving the set its unmistakable mid-century presence.
Selini favored expressive faces and architectural settings that command attention. This design draws on the Hollywood-era fascination with romanticized “Old World” imagery, filtered through fantasy rather than historical specificity. The piece reads as bold, sculptural, and unmistakably collectible—made to be worn with confidence.

ABOUT SELRO/SELINI
About Selro / Selini
Selro rose to prominence as a New York costume jewelry manufacturer in the postwar years, operating primarily from the late 1940s through the 1960s. Paul Selenger, an Odessa-born Russian immigrant, founded the company after arriving in the United States as a young man and later becoming a U.S. citizen. Before establishing Selro, Selenger gained industry experience at H. Pomerantz & Co. in New York.
Selenger created the name Selro by combining elements of his surname with his mother Rose’s first name. Family members participated in the business, including Selenger’s sister Fanny. Family recollections describe a Manhattan workshop active during the 1950s and early 1960s, where model makers and bench workers produced many of the company’s designs.
Selini and Related Lines
Although Selro Corp. was the primary company name, Selenger also produced jewelry under the Selini name, sometimes simultaneously. Pieces appear with either mark—and in rare cases, both—leading collectors to recognize Selro and Selini as closely linked lines from the same operation. Collectors also occasionally associate the lesser-known mark Selan with the firm.
Design and Production
Selro–Selini jewelry stands out for its bold visual language, especially expressive figural motifs, carved resin elements, and richly ornamented settings. Selenger designed many of the firm’s signature pieces himself. Wholesalers distributed the jewelry to department stores across the United States, and Selenger also worked within the industry as a jobber, coordinating or representing production for other costume jewelry houses, including Florenza and Capri.
Later Years and Legacy
By the late 1960s, Selro closed its Manhattan operations. Outside manufacturers, including Expansion Ltd., handled some later production before the line faded by the mid-1970s. Today, collectors prize Selro and Selini jewelry—especially signed figural designs—for their sculptural quality, theatrical scale, and unmistakable mid-century presence.
WHAT IS BLACKAMOOR JEWELRY
About Blackamoor Jewelry
Blackamoor refers to a decorative style that emerged in European decorative arts and later appeared in 20th-century costume jewelry, characterized by stylized figural heads often shown wearing crowns or ornate adornment.
The word Blackamoor derives from “Moor,” a term historically used in Europe to describe Muslim peoples of North Africa, particularly those who lived in or ruled parts of Spain, Italy, and the Mediterranean from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance.
By the mid-20th century, designers like Selini interpreted the motif through fantasy and theatrical design, rather than historical or cultural specificity. These pieces reflect the Hollywood-era fascination with dramatic, “Old World” imagery and bold sculptural form—an aesthetic lens common to the 1940s and 1950s rather than an ethnographic reference.
Today, Blackamoor-style jewelry is best understood as a product of its time: valued for craftsmanship, scale, and visual impact, while also contextualized within the evolving conversation around imagery and representation in decorative arts.
HOW TO CARE FOR VINTAGE JEWELRY
How to Care for Vintage Jewelry
Always handle vintage jewelry gently and store it carefully between wearings. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches, tangling, or metal abrasion. Avoid contact with water, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, which can dull finishes or weaken settings. To clean, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away oils and dust. For metals and stones, use a mild, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner suited to the materials. Never submerge rhinestone or glued pieces in water or use ultrasonic cleaners, as moisture can damage the foil backing or loosen stones. With proper care, your vintage jewelry will retain its beauty and character for years to come.
