What is a Platter Hat
A platter hat, also called a “plateau” or “platter beret,” was a late 1940s to 1950s adaptation of a design from the 1820s, characterized by a wide, almost completely flat disk brim with little or no discernible crown. The disk sits on top of a cup or platform called an inner crown grip that fits on the crown of the head. The dish hat, introduced by Dior in 1947, has a similar cup or crown that sits underneath the all-encompassing brim. From Hatatorium: An Essential Guide for Hat Collectors, 2nd Edition.
