Who was Leslie James?

Leslie James was a California based milliner active from the mid-1930s through the 1970s.  The company was a partnership between James Druce who handled the business end and Leslie Masters who created the designs. Leslie James was adept at all types of hat styles.  Their hats were always of the finest quality.  Their range of hats included the latest trends and also many timeless designs.

Madge has a fascinating blog post on this milliner.

A Breton hat is a rounded or flat-crowned hat with a brim that turns up around the edges, originally worn by peasants in Brittany, a region in France. Similar to a bowler, the brim is wider and rolls up more dramatically. Wide-brimmed Bretons were popular in the 1960s, when they were worn on the back of the head. An all-over feather Breton circa 1960-65 is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Art Boston.

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

  • Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.
  • Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.
  • If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
  • Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from Madge
